A Flourishing Start: The MacAlpines and Slate Sourdough’s Grand Opening

In the Arts District of Downtown Tulsa, a new bakery is set to become a beloved staple in the community. On July 26, 2024, the MacAlpine family will celebrate the grand opening of Slate Sourdough, a bakery born from passion, tradition, and community spirit. Located at 11 E Reconciliation Way, Slate Sourdough is not just another bakery; it’s a testament to the power of community and the joy of homemade bread.

The MacAlpine Journey: From Sourdough Tulsa to Slate Sourdough

Breanna and Lawrence MacAlpine’s journey began four years ago with the Sourdough Tulsa initiative. Their mission was simple yet profound: to make the art of sourdough baking accessible to everyone in Tulsa. Through workshops, markets, and a dedicated following of sourdough subscribers, the MacAlpines have shared their love for traditional, slow-fermented sourdough with the community.

Their efforts did not go unnoticed. As participants in Downtown Tulsa Partnership's Pop-Up Downtown program, the MacAlpines had the opportunity to test the market with a temporary storefront during the Winter of 2023-24. This program, designed to support entrepreneurs with affordable short-term leases, proved to be the perfect launching pad for Slate Sourdough.

A New Chapter in the Tulsa Arts District

Slate Sourdough’s new permanent home in the Tulsa Arts District is a dream come true for the MacAlpines and their loyal supporters. The bakery, open on Fridays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (or until sold out), offers a delightful array of baked goods. From traditional loaves and baguettes to coffee cakes, cinnamon rolls, and morning buns filled with local, seasonal fruit, every item is crafted with quality ingredients, including organic flour and non-GMO products.

“Quality ingredients are of the utmost importance to us,” Breanna MacAlpine shares. “The Downtown Tulsa community has asked us to be here many times over the years, and we are grateful and excited to unveil Slate Sourdough, Downtown’s artisan sourdough bakery.”

Celebrating Community and Tradition

The grand opening event on July 26 promises to be a vibrant celebration of community spirit. Starting at 10 a.m., the ribbon-cutting ceremony will feature speeches from Emily Scott, DTP's Director of Planning & Vitality, and Breanna MacAlpine herself. Their words will undoubtedly highlight the significance of small businesses like Slate Sourdough in fostering local connections and driving economic growth.

“We are so excited to see Slate Sourdough call Downtown its new permanent home,” Scott says. “Lawrence and Breanna excelled in the Pop-Up Downtown program this holiday season, and their products have become a beloved mainstay around Tulsa, including at the Downtown Farmers Market on Wednesday nights at Sixth and Main.”

A Day of Celebration

Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, attendees are invited to enjoy a day filled with Slate Sourdough’s delectable offerings for sampling or purchasing, giveaways, and sourdough trivia. The bakery will remain open until 2 p.m. (or until sellout) on Friday, giving everyone a chance to experience the shop's delightful flavors and warm atmosphere.

As the MacAlpines open their doors to the community, they bring with them not just delicious bread but also a sense of tradition, quality, and connection. Slate Sourdough is more than a bakery; it’s a symbol of what can be achieved when passion and community come together.
