The Ribbon Cutting and Block Party  for Ponyboy Barbershop

Mark your calendars for Saturday, August 10, as we bring out the big scissors for Ponyboy Barbershop's grand opening. This event promises a blend of community spirit and excitement! From performances by local musicians to coffee and more, it’s a block party you won’t want to miss. The event also features a Youth Services fundraiser, a free haircut giveaway, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony, underscoring the barbershop’s commitment to supporting local businesses and revitalizing the East Village.

On Saturday, August 10, Tulsa’s East Village will come alive with the grand opening of Ponyboy Barbershop—a day that promises community spirit, nostalgia, and a whole lot of fun. The man behind the shop, Nick Watson, is a Tulsa local with deep roots in the community. Like many Oklahomans, Nick read "The Outsiders" in middle school, and the strong friendship in story of the Greasers resonated deeply with him. Growing up, Nick and his friends shared a bond similar to that of the Greasers, inspiring them to emulate the loyalty and camaraderie of the characters.

When Nick decided to open his barbershop, he wanted a name that was synonymous with Tulsa’s culture. While he may not wield a switchblade like the characters in the novel, Nick has developed a passion for the straight-edge razor, and he’s eager to take care of Tulsa’s people with the same dedication and precision.

The grand opening will feature a DJ Set J, performances by Tribe Circus, coffee and lattes from SheBrews, and a Youth Services of Tulsa fundraiser. Adding to the excitement, Danny Boy O’Connor, founder of The Outsiders House Museum, will be present, selling museum merchandise and celebrating this new chapter in Tulsa’s story.

Date: Saturday, August 10
Time: 1-5 PM
Location: 810 E 3rd St

'The Outsiders' Cultural Impact

'The Outsiders': Tulsa’s Literary Treasure
Published in 1967 by Tulsa native S.E. Hinton, "The Outsiders" tells the story of the Greasers and Socs, rival teenage gangs in 1960s Tulsa.
The novel, written from the perspective of 14-year-old Ponyboy Curtis, has become a staple in American literature, particularly among young adults. Its honest portrayal of teenage angst and social divides has resonated with readers for decades, firmly embedding Tulsa in the hearts of its fans.

'The Outsiders': Film (1983)
The 1983 film adaptation of "The Outsiders," directed by Francis Ford Coppola, brought the story to an even wider audience and helped solidify its status as a cult classic. The film launched the careers of several actors who would go on to become A-list stars, including Tom Cruise, Rob Lowe, Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, and Ralph Macchio. Coppola's masterful direction and the stellar performances of the young cast brought a new level of intensity and authenticity to Hinton's narrative, making the film a beloved classic in its own right.

The Outsider House Museum

The Outsiders House Museum and Tour
No exploration of "The Outsiders" legacy in Tulsa is complete without mentioning The Outsiders House Museum.
Founded by Danny Boy O’Connor of House of Pain fame, the museum preserves the Curtis brothers' house featured in the 1983 film adaptation. Visitors can immerse themselves in memorabilia from the book and movie, providing a tangible connection to Hinton’s world. Located just a few minutes north of Downtown, the museum also offers tours, allowing fans to walk through the iconic locations that brought the story to life.

'The Outsiders' Stage Musical
The Tony Award-winning musical "The Outsiders" will premiere its North American tour in Downtown Tulsa at the Tulsa Performing Arts Center in Fall 2025! This 2023 musical adaptation brings the story to life on stage with music by Jonathan Clay and Zach Chance of folk duo Jamestown Revival. Garnering critical acclaim and multiple Tony Awards, the production a testament to the enduring impact of Hinton’s work.
