Downtown Safety Update 5/5

May 5, 2025

Category:  Clean and Safe

Our thoughts are with everyone impacted by the tragic event that took place early Sunday morning in the Blue Dome district.

We are deeply grateful for Tulsa Police Department’s consistent presence and patrol of our city’s biggest entertainment district and, as a result, their quick response on Saturday night. Officers were feet away when events unfolded. Their swift action likely prevented a greater tragedy.

At a press conference earlier this afternoon, Mayor Nichols, Chief of Police Dennis Larson, and Commissioner of Public Safety Laurel Roberts assured the community that this was an isolated incident and that the City and TPD are prepared for upcoming events taking place over the coming weeks.

We also joined the Mayor, Police Chief, Public Safety Commissioner and businesses directly impacted by Sunday’s events to discuss necessary changes and improvements in coordination and communication.

Additional community forums will be communicated to stakeholders soon – including the Public Safety Forum previously scheduled for May 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Central Library. https://downtowntulsa.com/publicsafety

Downtown requires an evolving public safety model to meet the ever-changing dynamics of an 18-hour neighborhood. Challenges and needs vary across the districts of our neighborhood, but, whether at noon or midnight, in the Blue Dome District or the Deco District, consistent police staffing, presence, and visibility are critical to ensure everyone’s safety. This was especially clear Saturday night.

What occurred on Saturday is not solely a Downtown issue – it’s a community-wide concern and one that must be addressed to protect the heartbeat of our city and those who live here and visit daily.

Downtown Tulsa Partnership remains committed to working and formulating solutions with the Mayor and City Council, Tulsa’s first responders, Tulsa County, and all willing partners to ensure Downtown is a safe and welcoming place for our residents, employees, and visitors.
