It commemorates the Greenwood District, often referred to as "Black Wall Street," which was devastated by the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre. Through exhibitions, artifacts, and educational programs, Greenwood Rising sheds light on this painful chapter of history while also celebrating the community's strength and contributions. The museum opened during the centennial year of the Race Massacre commemoration and continues to welcome locals and visitors from all over the world.

The expansive theme resonates in many subjects, from in-depth analyses of disability to delving into the intricate histories of impactful social and political movements. The center's location within the former art center breathes new life into its pursuit of knowledge, fostering an environment where history, art, and critical thought seamlessly intertwine.
