Juror Statement:
In this year of Handwork 2026, I focused on pieces uniquely celebrating fiber in its material form. On the national and international art scene, fiber art is enjoying long-overdue attention and excitement. In our current moment, handwork seems especially important, offering an antidote to screens and opportunities for mindful rejuvenation and connection. In this exhibition of work by Oklahoma fiber artists, we see the range and versatility of fiber art, with everything from traditional to contemporary explorations and innovative uses of materials and ideas. Among other things, the works honor cultural connections and personal stories, show a reverence for nature, express humor and imagination, in pieces for the wall, floor and the body. It is an honor and a pleasure to help bring Fireworks 2026 to life. Thank you to all the artists, organizers and viewers for making this possible. Keep the hand and mind connection going. And to our audience, find your way to your own handwork in whatever medium, in 2026 and beyond!
About juror Astrid Bennett:
Trained as a printmaker, my interest in fiber art and “making things” began in childhood. I was a born in Germany, emigrated to Canada and then the US, as a preschooler.
